If a tooth has more extensive decay, a dental crown may be the ideal aesthetic and functional restorative solution.

A crown covers the entire visible portion of a tooth, restoring its original shape, size, and strength. Dr. Sigismondi typically recommends a crown when a tooth is too damaged or weakened to be repaired with a filling — after significant decay, a fracture, root canal treatment, or the failure of a large existing restoration.

Choosing to have a crown placed can preserve the natural tooth, which is always the goal as preserving the natural teeth helps maintain the supporting bone structure and stability of the surrounding and adjacent teeth.

What to expect when you receive a dental crown

The first step in the process is to take an impression that will be used to make a model of the teeth and bite. This allows the crown to be made to look and function like your natural tooth. The tooth is then prepped, with the decayed areas removed and the remaining tooth structure shaped to support the restoration. A second impression of the prepped tooth is taken so that the final crown fits properly when it is placed.

Sometimes the final crown can be placed on the same day. Other times a temporary crown protects the prepared tooth while the permanent crown is made at our dental lab. A temporary crown is not as durable as the final restoration, so it helps to avoid sticky foods and to chew on the opposite side until your permanent crown is placed. Our office also offers same-day restorations for patients who are candidates for that approach.

Crowns often last many years with proper oral hygiene, routine cleanings, and regular dental care. Patients who grind their teeth at night may be advised to wear a nightguard to protect the longevity of the restoration.

There are four common types of crowns:

Ceramic

This type of crown is often used for teeth that are visible when smiling as they are made from a porcelain-based material that retains the look of your natural teeth.

Porcelain Fused to Metal

These crowns are known for their strength and durability while also allowing for a natural-looking restoration.

Gold Alloys

These may be used when more strength is needed, particularly for patients who grind their teeth at night.

Base Metal Alloys

These are strong and corrosion-resistant and are often used when there is less existing tooth structure available to support the crown restoration.

Dr. Sigismondi will examine the tooth, review your bite, and discuss which crown material is the best fit for your situation before treatment begins.
